"May the 18 Saints watch over you, guiding your way," said the cleric of Urdanzer to the departing adventurer. "I don't care much for the Saints, they mean nothing to me," replied the dwarf, Argodar Ironcrag, to the cleric. The cleric replied, "Care or care not... they are your gudes to success or failure. Unlike the gods, they do not require your blessing or prayers in order to do you grievous harm, or guide you toward prosperity." Later that day, Argodar was slain in the cave of the Gnarlbear.
Background: Saints are intermediaries and active forces in the world of Otha. Though far less powerful than the gods and goddesses, the saints possess cross disciplines, and some hold a deific domain all their own. Anyone, regardless of alignment, may appeal to the saints for intercession on their behalf. Often, the saints will carry the prayers of the pious or needy toward loftier ears, but are often capable of handling the request all on their own.
Game Mechanics: Knowlege of the saints earns a knowledge category of its own. Ranks cannot be selected unless the player character invokes the Saint's name during play, prior to earning an available skill point. The actions of the saints can have in-game effects, especially when a successful invocation is conducted by player characters during key story moments with a successful Knowledge (The Saints) check.
